A CARLOW man who was found smoking a cannabis joint while sitting on swings at a local playground was fined €150 at Carlow District Court. Solicitor Joe Farrell appeared on behalf of the defendant (28) who entered a guilty plea to a section 3 Misuse of Drugs Act offence before Judge Geraldine Carthy.

The court heard that on 24 September 2024, while on duty, Garda Bishop observed two men seated on swings at a Carlow playground. He noticed a strong smell of cannabis and observed the defendant smoking what appeared to be a cannabis joint.

Garda Bishop seized the joint and the man made a voluntary admission to possession for his personal use. Drug testing subsequently confirmed the substance was cannabis.

The court heard that the defendant has one previous conviction from April 2024, also for possession of drugs for personal use, for which he received a €100 fine.

Judge Carthy remarked that she was “somewhat aware of this gentleman’s circumstances” before convicting him and imposing a fine of €150, to be paid within 90 days.
