Climate funding worth €420k awarded to Carlow community groups

THE Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment recently announced that it had awarded €423,696 to 18 community groups in Co Carlow for climate action. The funding is for these groups to be able to carry out projects aimed at reducing emissions, improving energy efficiency and building more sustainable communities.

The successful organisations were: An Gairdín Beo, Bagenalstown Area Community Development Group, Bagenalstown Swimming Club CLG, Ballinkillen Lorum Community Centre Club, Carlow GAA County Board, Carlow Senior Citizens Association, Carlow Town Hurling and Camogie Club, Delta Centre CLG, Éire Óg GAA, Kildavin Clonegal Community GAA Club, O’Hanrahan’s GFC, Palatine GAA Club, Rathvilly Tidy Towns, St Patrick’s GAA Club, St Fiacc’s Swimming Pool and Community Hall CLG, St Mullins GAA Club, Tullow Day Care Centre CLG and Tullow Rugby Football Club.

The funding awards were marked by a special event in the council chamber at county buildings which was attended by representatives of the successful organisations, elected members, minister Jennifer Murnane O’Connor, and deputy Catherine Callaghan, and members of the Council's Climate Action Team.

The Climate Action Fund is a national fund established to support projects that help Ireland achieve its climate and energy targets through innovative initiatives that might otherwise not be possible.

The projects will include solar PV installations, energy efficiency upgrades, rainwater harvesting systems, bicycle parking and repair facilities, community growing spaces and waste reduction initiatives.

The launch event gave successful applicants an opportunity to meet members of the Climate Action Team and county council officials to discuss project delivery requirements and learn about the supports available to ensure the successful implementation of their initiatives. All groups will be delivering their local projects over the next 16 months and claiming funding from Carlow County Council as project milestones are complete.

At the event, Carlow County Council representatives reiterated their commitment to work closely with all 18 organisations as they deliver projects that will help create more sustainable, resilient and climate-conscious communities throughout Co Carlow.
