Lidl Ireland has opened the doors of its highly anticipated new store in Graiguecullen, Carlow earlier today. Carlow LGFA captain Róisín Bailey and Laois LGFA captain Andrea Moran joined the Lidl team this morning to perform the ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking a major milestone for the local community.

Demonstrating the retailer’s commitment to sustainability, Lidl Graiguecullen will be the first top energy-rated supermarket of its kind in Ireland, achieving the highest A0 Building Energy Rating (BER), following the opening of Ireland’s first net zero supermarket at Lidl Maynooth in November last year.

To mark the store’s integration into the local area, Lidl Ireland has also announced a donation of €1,000 to the Carlow GAA Referee's Association and €1,000 to St Fiacc's House CLG. These contributions aim to support the work the services provided to the community, ensuring the store’s opening leaves a positive, lasting impact on the neighborhood.

The new store, located in Graiguecullen represents a €10M investment in the local area and will create 25 new permanent jobs.

The new store in Graiguecullen reflects Lidl’s established ‘concept’ design which features a spacious 1,499 sqm sales floor area, offering a premier shopping experience for customers self-service checkouts, long tills, two Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) machines, an off licence, customer restrooms with baby changing facilities and the popular in-store bakery offering fresh baked goods daily.

Sustainability is a key focus for the new store as the retail unit incorporates the highest environmental standards as a Zero Emission Building (ZEB), achieving Ireland’s new top-tier A0 Building Energy Rating (BER), making it the first supermarket of its kind in Ireland. The store reflects a future-proofed design, ensuring exceptionally low energy demand, maximum thermal efficiency, and minimal carbon emissions. Within the spacious car park, the provision of a number of bike spaces and electric vehicle (EV) charging points further supports sustainable transport options for customers and store teams.

Laois LGFA captain Andrea Moran: "I am thrilled to be here in Graiguecullen today to officially open this fantastic new Lidl store. Lidl has been a massive supporter of the LGFA for a decade, and that same community spirit is evident in their support for local groups like St Fiacc's House CLG. It was wonderful to meet so many local residents this morning as they walked through the doors for the first time!"

Carlow LGFA Captain Róisín Bailey said: “As a player, I know how much Lidl’s decade-long support means to the LGFA and women's sport across Ireland. Lidl’s generous donation to the Carlow GAA Referee's Association is a massive boost for our local sports community, and I know this brilliant new facility will be a huge asset to everyone in the area for years to come."
