Caretaker to take up duty at St Mary's Cemetery

St Mary's Cemetery, Carlow
A FULL-TIME groundskeeper will be hired for St Mary’s Cemetery, Carlow in the next few months following recent incidents of anti-social behaviour.
The announcement was made at the latest meeting of Carlow County Council, when mayor of Carlow MD cllr Fintan Phelan raised concern about the ongoing behaviour in St Mary’s.
However, the new groundskeeper will not be appointed for four to five months, which led cathaoirleach Fergal Browne to suggest the hiring of an interim caretaker until the full-time position is filled.
Director of services Pádraig O’Gorman said the council could possibly look at further measures.
He also said additional signage was installed at the cemetery in December following reports from the public about anti-social behaviour, however the measure was described by cllr John Cassin as about as “impactful as an ashtray on a motorbike”.
