Drugs & Mental Health Awareness in Sport

SOME OF leading names in sport will join a discussion titled Drugs and mental health awareness in sport: Let’s talk at the Woodford Dolmen Hotel next Wednesday, 30 October, at 7pm.

The panel will include Davy Fitzgerald, Antrim hurling manager and host of the hugely popular Davy’s Toughest Team, former Kilkenny hurler Richie Power, who has been very outspoken about his own battles with gambling addiction, Ray McKenna and Bernard Horohan.

MC for the panel discussion is Bernard Hennessy, while the event has been organised by deputy Jennifer Murnane O’Connor.

“For myself, its personal. It’s something that is affecting every sport, every county, every club and we need to talk about it and address it,” said Bernard Horohan, who’s actively involved in Carlow GAA at club and county level. There’s a social aspect to it: a match is on, and people are given odds on the score. It’s everywhere, but for an awful lot of people it is a problem,” he added.
