A KILDAVIN native has won a national award at the recent Teagasc/FBD Student of the Year Awards 2025, held in the Lyrath Estate Hotel recently.

Bernadette Donohue, who farms at home with her husband John on their sheep and beef farm near Kildavin, was named student of the year in the part-time and distance education category after she completed her green certificate in the Teagasc office in Tinahely, which caters for the Wicklow, Carlow and Wexford region.

She was described as an outstanding student, achieving distinctions in all her course modules, as well as serving as the class representative, helping her fellow classmates and encouraging them to achieve their full potential.

“Throughout her studies, Bernadette successfully balanced the demands of family life, farming responsibilities, off-farm employment and education,” said Teagasc education officer Grainne O’Shea.

“Despite these commitments, her attendance, participation and standard of work were exemplary. She approached every aspect of the course with enthusiasm and positivity and was a constant source of encouragement and support to those around her,” she added.

Throughout the course, Bernadette displayed a great passion for flower arranging and horticulture and has plans to develop this passion further as part of the family farm enterprise.
