Amazing Ellen receives her centenarian medal

Ellen 'Essie' Glynn from New Oak Estate, Carlow is presented with her centenarian's medal by cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council cllr Fergal Browne
HONOURING Co Carlow’s most senior citizens is always a wonderful occasion, so to bestow that honour to Co Carlow’s oldest person was always going to be something extra special.
Ellen ‘Essie’ Glynn (née Moran), New Oak Estate, Carlow was recently presented with her centenarian’s medal by cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council cllr Fergal Browne. Last June, the wonderful mother to three, grandmother of eight, great-grandmother of 12 and great-great-grandmother of twins reached the remarkable age of 105.

During his presentation, cllr Browne reflected on some of the momentous events Essie has lived through, including the establishment of the State and two World Wars. Essie’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were on hand to help her celebrate this wonderful achievement and celebrate her long and extraordinary life. Ellen believes the secret to her long life is hard work and her strong belief in prayers. And obviously that secret is working because she is one of only 15 people in the country to have reached that tremendous age. Born on 28 June 1919 in Garryhundon, Tinryland to parents Daniel and Mary, Ellen married Johnny Glynn from Raheendoran in 1947. The couple had three children – Mary, Mickey and Kathleen. Essie worked hard from a young age and always believed in the motto 'hard work never killed anyone'. The centenarian’s medal is awarded to all Carlovians that have reached 100 years of age. If there is anyone you know that is, or is soon to reach 100 years of age, contact the Library Service at library@carlowcoco.ie.
