Patrick Kelly (62) from Newforge Lane in Belfast, sustained severe brain and facial injuries after he came off his bicycle while going over the speed ramp on the outskirts of Ashford, Co Wicklow.

John Kelly’s father, Private Patrick Kelly, was killed while taking part in the rescue of a supermarket executive kidnapped by the Provisional IRA.

Two members of the State’s security forces were killed during the operation.
