The trial of Riad Bouchaker (52) also heard that when gardaí opened a rucksack found at the scene of the stabbing, they found packaging for a 24cm carving knife.

The trial of 52-year-old Riad Bouchaker, of no fixed address, opened before the Central Criminal Court in Dublin on Wednesday.

Judge Tony Hunt told a panel of potential jurors that the trial could take up to five weeks.
