A woman in her 50s has died after getting into difficulty off the coast of Donegal

A passerby heard the swimmer shouting for help, and made an emergency call to the Coast Guard.

It follows an incident off the Inishowen Peninsula yesterday afternoon that sparked a huge search and rescue mission.

The woman was an experienced swimmer but her body temperature dropped quickly as hypothermia set in.

Ireland won two bronze medals in a matter of minutes on Tuesday.
