The latest report by independent auditors commissioned by the Houses of the Oireachtas confirmed that all the money had subsequently been refunded to the State.

The Oireachtas said €2.98 million was paid in monthly termination payments to politicians who retired or lost their seats.

"People just want the chance to pick the President. And that's my message to TDs and Senators in this eleventh hour, let the people pick the president," Peadar Tóibín said.

The non-refundable costs were run up on dozens of air fares and hotel stays since the beginning of last year.
