Virgilio Almeida Cardoso Neto said he had no chance to stop or avoid crashing into the door of the car that had been stopped partly in the cycle lane and on Crumlin Road, Dublin.

Juan Souza Gomes, 25, with no fixed address, appeared at a weekend sitting of Dublin District Court.

The man has been named locally as Paddy O’Donoghue (81) from Gortahoonig, Muckross, Killarney, Kerry.

Shortly after 7.30am, gardaí were alerted to the collision on the junction of Griffeen Avenue, R136 and Balgaddy Road.

His body has since been removed to the mortuary at University Cork Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

It happened on the Monaghan Road in the Middletown area.

The cyclist, a man in his 40s, was brought to Beaumont Hospital, where he was subsequently pronounced dead.

A car driver was uninjured in the incident.

The cyclist was conveyed by ambulance to Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, where his condition is understood to be serious.
