Craig Sweetman attended the ‘Peter Bidwell’ race in Donore last Saturday evening. He was not racing due to an injury. He took ill and died at his home on Sunday.

Shortly after 7.30am, gardaí were alerted to the collision on the junction of Griffeen Avenue, R136 and Balgaddy Road.

His body has since been removed to the mortuary at University Cork Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

It happened on the Monaghan Road in the Middletown area.

Gardaí responded just after 8pm on Wednesday night on the R627 near Westpark, in Midleton

The cyclist, a man in his 40s, was brought to Beaumont Hospital, where he was subsequently pronounced dead.

A car driver was uninjured in the incident.

The cyclist was conveyed by ambulance to Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, where his condition is understood to be serious.
