THE number of sheep owners in the area may have reduced in recent years, but competition remained every bit as competitive for the annual Tullow Sheepbreeders’ competition.
The best pair of Suffolk cheviot cross ewe lambs and hogget ewes, as well as the best pair of cheviot ewe lambs and hogget ewes, were all under scrutiny for the competition. The competition was held in Tullow Livestock Sales and mart manager John Murphy, was pleased with the quality livestock on show.
“Numbers are smaller in recent years but there were still a good number of entries,” said Mr Murphy.
Winner of the best pair of Suffolk cheviot cross ewe lambs was James Walsh, Ballytarsna, Nurney while Thomas McCarthy, Knocksquire, Borris, won the hogget ewes’ category. It was a double win for farmer Pat Dunne, from Hollywood, who took home top honours in the cheviot ewe lambs and hogget ewe categories.
Presentations to the winners were made by Tom Bolger, chairman of Tullow Sheepbreeders and John Murphy mart manager.
The next big day on the calendar of Tullow Livestock Sales is tomorrow (Wednesday August 11) when the mart’s hosts the first of its annual show and sale.
