BUNCLODY has been buzzing with activity for the past three weeks.
The Eileen Aroon Festival, which comes to a close tonight (Tuesday) brought a whole host of events to the town.
From pub quizzes to theatre, dog shows to kids shows, treasure hunts, duck races and much more, there really was something for everyone at this year’s festival.
“Because of the recession and people with a lack of money, we condensed a lot of things and tried to appeal to a wide age group,” said Barbara Ann Murphy, chairperson of the festival organising committee.
Hundreds of Carlovians travelled to our neighbouring county to enjoy the many delights on offer since Wednesday 21 July.
Last week, local dance school, Footloose, and several local bands entertained a large crowd in Market Square.
A highlight of the annual event was the Eileen Aroon festival queen competition which was held in the Carlton Millrace Hotel before a capacity crowd.
Local girl Rebecca O’Connor was crowned queen bee on the bank holiday Sunday at a special announcement ceremony.
Daughter of Ann and Barty O’Connor, Rebecca is a student in FCJ Bunclody.
Richard Breen, son of Fran and Aideen, Ballypracus, Bunclody, was announced as best escort.
A record number of entrants attended the car treasure hunt on Sunday 1 August. A team from Furlong/Bodels came first, followed closely by Stephensons and in third place was a car from Liz Phelan and Co.
The local festival has proven a great success since it began in 1988 and this year was the first time a triathlon was included in the events.
“It’s great fun and people love it. There’s always good feedback. It’s lovely to see so many people out and enjoying themselves,” added Barbara Ann.
