STEAKS and salads… they couldn’t make them quick enough for the hungry bunch at the Slaney Country Market’s summer barbecue in Kildavin recently.
Upwards of 170 adults lined up for the delicious homemade goodies on offer and the kids weren’t left out either with homemade burgers for all.
The sold-out barbecue party got into full swing at 6pm outside Conway’s Pub.
“We had the barbecue to showcase the market and the produce. We had steaks, salads and desserts, all for €10, what more could you want,” said Helga Mullen, secretary and PRO of the market.
The barbecue raised around €800 for the local cancer homecare team and Helga was delighted with the turnout. “It was really, really good. It was sold out by Saturday evening, it was over subscribed, actually we had to get more steaks in,” she laughed.
When Helga moved to Kildavin three years there was no shop in the village, now there’s a country market. And it’s all thanks to the 25 local producers who meet every week to sell their homemade goods.
The market started on 14 February 2009 and was held weekly in the community hall in Kildavin until recently. The hall is now being refurbished and the market has taken up temporary residence on Market Square, Bunclody.
Trading is from 10am to 12noon every Saturday morning, the 25 locals sell everything from homegrown fruit and veg, to handmade wicker baskets, jewellery, artisan food and much more.
