ONE of the highlights of the Borris Cubs’ year took place last week when presentations took place in the south Carlow town.
A large crowd gathered for the annual event which saw the Cub of the Year award handed out and also the Best Improved Cub.
The Cub of the Year section came down to a choice between Padraig Coleman and Taylor O’Toole, but the judges couldn’t make a decision, and both boys shared the coveted award.
“Both are equally brilliant in their own way, and we just couldn’t separate them,” said Betty Dalton.
“The motto of the cubs is ‘do your best’ and it doesn’t matter if you win everything or finish first all the time: you can still win Cub of the Year’ even if you finish last. In the Best Improved Scout section there was only one winner and that was Cormac Lalor from Drumphea, who has progressed superbly since joining the group.
“Cormac is the youngest cub and there was nobody else from his area here when he joined, and he was extremely quiet. Now he has greatly improved and he is joining us on our five-day pack holiday and he has made great friends,” added Betty.
The event was well-attended by parents and local residents. From the scouting world the leaders of the 14th Kilkenny, Bennestbridge, 5th Carlow, 4th Kilkenny, Inistiogue, and 3rd Thomastown also attended, while Deirdre Condren from the newly-opened Borris Library and Brigid Dalton from CRISP were also present.
