THE GYM isn’t for everyone but we’ve got that covered in Carlow town.
With 2012 now up and running and those well-meaning resolutions still to the fore of many a Carlo¬vian’s mind, free fitness are¬as like Tone Zone in the Éire Óg complex – an initiative run by County Carlow Sports Part¬nership – could be the answer to many prayers.
And you have a choice, because as well as Tone Zone, the council’s amenity and recreation division has recently installed fitness equipment in the grounds of Oak Park. While Éire Óg’s Tone Zone has been up and running for a few years now, the fitness area in Oak Park has only been open for a few months, yet both are thriving.
The fitness areas are really an excellent example of how the community can work together to give the people of Carlow town something which benefits everyone.
Take the facility in Éire Óg, which was officially opened in October of 2010. The multi-purpose activity area has quickly ingratiated itself into the heart of the local community, with Martha-Jane Duggan of County Carlow Sports Partnership reporting that there has been a great uptake in the amount of people using the outdoor gym in 2011.
“Éire Óg have been fantastic in that they are very happy to allow everyone come in and use the facility,” said Martha-Jane.
Likewise, in Oak Park, the outdoor gym facilities there are free for all to use.
The maintenance and upkeep of these outdoor gyms by both community groups and local authorities – and the fact that all age groups have embraced them so readily – is testament to the fact that community spirit is alive and kicking in Carlow town.
