OVER 300 unemployed people across County Carlow attended a range of education and training programmes in 2011.

According to Carlow County Development Partnership (CCDP), a variety of courses was offered by them to the people of Carlow, catering for the diverse needs of individuals in an effort to combat unemployment.

“In line with the current economic decline, there is an ever-increasing demand for services and supports for the unemployed,” said CCDP social inclusion manager Aislinn Brennan.

Practical courses included FETAC level 5 occupational first-aid and HACCP food hygiene, along with safe pass and computers for those who wished to build upon previous learning, improve their CV and enhance their employment prospects.

CCDP also joined forces with Carlow/Kilkenny Skillnet to offer support to people at supervisory level to get back into employment by undergoing FETAC level 6 train the trainer, business management and patient-handling courses.

Business information workshops were also held in collaboration with Carlow Enterprise Board.

Their intention was to provide candidates with a brief insight into what it is like to set up and run their own business.

A host of other courses were also offered through the CCDP, from stress management to sign language, and these will all run again this year.

“At CCDP, we are strongly committed to providing a range of services and supports in 2012 for those individuals and families who are experiencing unemployment in Carlow town and county,” said Aislinn.

“The majority of our courses are free to those who are unemployed, and each of these services will assist people to increase their work readiness and improve their chances of sourcing employment.”
