THE people of Borris are about to make a big splash into tourism if plans to build a new swimming pool in the town get the green light.

Recently, a public meeting was held on the issue and the response was overwhelming, with almost 80 people turning up and giving 100% commitment to the idea.

The project, which will include a swimming pool and gym facilities, is expected to cost in the region of €750,000 to €1m while, at the moment, up to six sites are being examined in the centre of the village as a potential location for the development.

“We had an excellent response,” said cllr Willie Quinn, who chaired the public meeting.

“People are 100% behind Borris having a swimming pool, and a nine-person committee has been established to go ahead and put in place a feasibility study, hopefully with the support of LEADER.”

Cllr Quinn added that the committee would be in a position to go back to the public at the end of September with its plans well underway.

“There’s is nothing for people who enjoy swimming in the south of the county. People from Graignamanagh, Goresbridge, Myshall, St Mullins ... all that catchment area would use facilities here in Borris, but at the moment there aren’t any. There are also about 15 schools located within the catchment area”.

The drive is all part of a major push in the village into the tourism market. The picturesque location is looking fantastic at the moment, with the community putting in a huge effort as part of the tidy towns’ initiative. Once again, Borris is hosting its own tidy towns’ competition and has encouraged everyone to get involved.

“There’s between 115 and 120 people here every night working in the village – it’s fantastic; the place is looking great and hopefully that will be seen in our results,” said cllr Quinn.

On the August bank holiday weekend, Borris will host a music festival and will also present the prizes from the tidy towns competition.
