YOUNG and old alike are making sweet music in Carlow this Christmas.
Men and women over the age of 50 are being asked to join a new ‘Singing Together’ programme, which will see them join musical forces with youngsters across the county.
The groups will then form choirs in Bagenalstown, Borris and Carlow town and will hold a selection of performances, culminating in a grand occasion in the GB Shaw Theatre in the coming months.
The 12-week programme, spearheaded by Carlow Active Retired, with the help of Mary Amond O’Brien, launched a taste night in Bagenalstown Vocational School recently.
Almost 30 local adults and 12 students from the school came together to enjoy an evening of music, song and laughter in the school.
“It was good old craic. It was great to see older people meeting and remembering old times. It’s reconnecting the community and, if nothing else, that’ll be worth it,” said school principal David O’Flaherty.
At the launch night there was a good mix of old and new songs played, with both young and old enjoying some of their favourite hits.
“It’s a work in progress but it was playful. It’s great,” added Mr O’Flaherty.
The free sessions will be held across the three areas in the coming weeks and anyone interested in taking part is asked to contact John O’Keeffe on 059 9143937.
