PARENTS and children from Carlow town were treated to a day with a difference recently.

Families took part in a “fun day” with a slight twist in the grounds of Presentation College, Askea on Wednesday 2 November.

The inaugural event was held to encourage families to try different physical activities together, and was organised by Rapid, in association with Carlow Regional Youth Services, Carlow Sports Partnership, Barnardos and County Carlow Development Partnership.

Rapid co-ordinator Midge Nolan said those in attendance got to try everything from hurling and rowing to soccer and curling, with plenty of local clubs getting involved and volunteering their time for free.

Facebook fun at The Foundry

CARLOW clubbers wanting to share their nights of debauchery in The Foundry are now well-equipped.

New lightning-fast wireless technology has been installed in the club by a Tipperary company, which allows revellers to share their fun times on Facebook as they happen.

The live, social networking link is made possible under an entertainment project involving Clonmel-based VisionID, leading Dublin-based international communications company Ogilvy, and technology developed by FISH Technologies. Through the social networking project, clubbers can share photos of their night as soon as they happen. And Carlow Foundry is not the only club in on the game, with Krystal in Dublin, Havana Browns in Cork, The Icon in Limerick, as well as the CHQ building in Dublin’s IFSC all involving themselves in the project.

So how does it work? Well, revellers sign into Facebook as soon as they arrive in The Foundry and their account is synched with an RFID (radio frequency identification) key fob. Every time they swipe the fob on a staff member’s tablet computer, it updates their account with whatever they want to upload.

This means you have instant access to the fastest wireless out there and your night is documented forever!

Bag pack at Tesco will benefit Rehab

OUTSTANDING work should be supported. And with that in mind, RehabCare are asking the people of Carlow to get behind a special bag-packing weekend.

Tesco in the Fairgreen Shopping Centre have kindly lent their support to the event, and next Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the folks from Rehab will be helping customers to pack their shopping.

For those who don’t know, RehabCare provide training for people with special needs in their workshop on the Killeshin Road and their phenomenal work has helped hundreds of their users get the very best out of life.

Hugh Maddock from RehabCare explained: “With continued cutbacks in funding for services for people with special needs, events like these are hugely important.

“It would be greatly appreciated if you are shopping in Tesco over next weekend to spare as much as possible and to assist us with our bag-pack. All the proceeds from the event will benefit RehabCare services in Carlow.”

Computer certs for wheelchair group

MEMBERS of the Carlow branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association were honoured recently.

The ten-strong group took part in a beginners’ computer course, which was run by CRISP and received their graduation certificates last week.

CRISP operates a mobile service, which brings laptops to different organisations, and schools and those in the Irish Wheelchair Association were on the receiving end of some tuition.

The eight-week course touched on a wide variety of beginners’ computer subjects, with learners being taught how to use everything from email to Facebook.
