Civic-minded residents give John Sweeney Park a facelift

RESIDENTS in John Sweeney Park enthusiastically rolled up their sleeves and decided to “do it themselves” by giving their estate a fresh, new look.

A group came together to tackle an unsightly wall and to clean up the area that surrounds it, which was totally unsuitable for children to play in.

“There was a lot of graffiti on the wall and the grass area beside it is full of broken glass and is very dangerous,” explained Sharon Supple, one of those who volunteered to help.

“A boy fell in the area recently and had to get 11 stitches on his knee, so that’s when we decided something would have to be done,” she added.

Neighbours gathered for a series of meetings, which resulted in a determined bunch coming together one Saturday to paint the wall.

Carlow Town Council kindly donated the paint, while the residents were also helped by volunteers from John Sweeney Community House.

While some took on the job of painting, others kindly made sandwiches to keep everyone happy and in top form for work.

Ultimately, the residents hope to dig up the grass area and tarmac it, making it more suitable for the community’s needs.

“If there is anyone out there who is willing to give their time and resources, it would be very much appreciated,” said Sharon.
