LOCAL man Jim McCormack will rep¬resent Tullow Active Retirement Asso¬ciation at the launch of the Active Retirement Ireland’s National Bowls tournament, which will be held in Mayo later this month.
Now in its second year, the tournament will take place on Monday to Thursday, 26-29 September, when more than 400 retired men and women from Carlow and throughout Ireland will take part in the event. The sporting bowlers will compete for the Breaffy Perpetual Cup, which will be presented to the winning team.
While attending the launch, Jim participated in two draws to decide the playing order of the 49 teams, which will compete. Playing in mixed teams of four, competitors – who will range in age from 55 to 90 – will play in one either the small or large bowls contests.
All set for Tidy Towns verdict in Rathvilly
ANTICIPATION is high in Rathvilly these days, as local residents wait to see who will take home the top prizes in this year’s local tidy town awards.
With judging in this year’s competition already out of the way, it is a waiting game now until the final announcements, which are expected to take place in early October.
Some of the categories in this year’s competition include best house in an estate, best garden in an estate, best house (overall), best garden (overall), best estate, best house as well as best hanging baskets.
Meanwhile, the local committee has welcomed the results in this year’s annual tidy towns competition.
“We have come up four marks (283) since last year and we are now in joint fourth place with Tullow,” said Rathvilly Tidy Towns committee chairman Noel Kennedy.
“We’re getting there,” Noel added.
Rathvilly claimed the national tidy towns title in 1961.
