CARLOW Rowing Club’s junior women travelled to County Leitrim for the annual Carrick-on-Shannon sprints which took place recently.

Carlow picked up five wins in total the junior 15 girls winning the national Waterways league in their category.

This league has been taking place between clubs all over Ireland for the last number of years. The clubs that enter pick up points from different regattas throughout the year with the finals taking place at Carrick, as well as winning medals and t-shirts for the winning crews the clubs win a set of sculling oars.

Carlow has been very lucky over the last few years with wins in both junior men and junior women.

Carlow had a total of five wins. In the junior 16 quad the crew of Catherine Mc Gee, Stina Tzedkri, Aisling O’Loughlin, Maria Kennedy and Cox Shauna Ray won their final with Catherine going on the to win the junior 16 sculls.

In the junior 15 quad sculls the crew of Bronwyn Hogan, Maria Kennedy, Rebecca Mc Dermott, Lauren Pauley and Cox Shauna Ray won their final and in deed their section of the Waterways League. Carlow’s Aoife Byrne won the junior 15 sculls.

Carlow’s young women took part in other races but sadly missed out on medal places. Overall their coaches were very happy with the girls’ performances on the day and are looking forward to next year.

In other news Carlow’s men and women travelled to Graiguenamanagh in Co Kilkenny to take part in their regatta. Part of summer festivals this fun day saw Carlow pick up many wins.
