CARLOW is the cleanest town in the country ... and that’s official!

Yesterday (Monday), the town was announced as the cleanest in Ireland for 2010, pipping 53 towns and cities to the post in the survey of litter levels by Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) organisation.

“We’re as proud as punch and thrilled to be announced as winners,” said cathaoirleach of Carlow Town Council Walter Lacey, minutes after the announcement.

This is the third time Carlow town has been awarded top honours, previously winning IBAL in 2002 and 2005.

“To receive this award for a third time is a huge achievement and great credit to all involved,” cllr Lacey added.

Yesterday, cllr Lacey, joined by assistant town clerk Seamus de Faoite and litter warden Pat Kehoe were presented with a special plaque by Dr Tom Cavanagh, chairman of IBAL, at a glittering ceremony in the Conrad Hotel, Dublin.

Speaking to The Nationalist, cllr Lacey and town clerk Michael Brennan, paid tribute to all who made the win possible, including the town council’s amenity trust governed by FÁS, Delta Force, council staff and members, Carlow Chamber of Commerce, Carlow Tidy Towns, local schools and community groups and residents’ associations.

“Obviously we are delighted to win – in fact, we are the only town to win it three times,” enthused Mr Brennan.
