BRAUN closed its doors for the last time on Friday after 36 years in the town.
The workforce has dwindled in the past year since the manufacturing company announced the closure and the loss of 160 jobs.
Braun was established on the O’Brien Road in 1974 and has been a staple in Carlow’s industry ever since. At the height of its success Braun employed over 1,000 people. Last week, all that remained were 42 members of staff.
The last remaining members of the workforce were treated to a “last supper” on Thursday by management as they shut up shop. The men and women were brought to Teach Dolmain for a farewell breakfast on Thursday at 11am.
According to one worker, who wished not to be named, it was “good, but very sad”.
“It was very emotional, the last supper nearly, you know,” she added.
Workers enjoyed the hearty breakfast, organised by management, before they returned to work to clear out the rest of their belongings.
“For most people that was the final clocking out, the end. There were only a handful of us in on Friday to finish up,” she added.
Emotional farewells were made on Friday evening as workers, past and present, were also treated to a night out in Teach Dolmain.
