It’s back to the future for rockabilly rebels

HACKETSTOWN students were transported back to the rockabilly 1950s in a music video for a local singer-songwriter.

Niall McCarney, a former student of Coláiste Eoin, returned to his alma mater to create musical magic with his fantastic song Wish Me Well.

“It’s the first video I’ve done and I’m delighted with it. I’m happy out,” Niall told The Nationalist.

Students from first, second, fourth and fifth years make their appearance in the video, shot in the school, along with third-year student and Niall’s own brother David, who plays the lead male.

“He was in an ad before so it’s not his first time in front of the camera,” laughed Niall.

“The students were great. They were all very enthusiastic; I just told them we were going for a rockabilly look and said ‘dress up’ and they looked great.”

And completing the Hacketstown hat-trick is past pupil Áine Byrne, who took charge as director and camera woman of the venture.

Niall, who finished an English and music degree last summer, is currently recording a number of tracks with musical maestro Ollie Hennessy and is hoping to secure more gigs and support slots over the coming months. “It’s all my own stuff. I got feedback from a record company – they showed a bit of interest so it’s all good at the minute,” added Niall.

Niall’s video went live on his YouTube channel (youtube.com/user/niallmccarneymusic) two weeks ago and has been inundated with thousands of hits ever since.

His second video, Off the Wall, is due to be released online at the beginning of April.

Catch Niall live during Rag Week tomorrow (Wednesday) at the Cedar Square, Dinn Rí.
