A FORMER student of IT Carlow has now taken over the position of president of the institute.

Carlow woman Dr Patricia Mulcahy, who studied at the IT, has stepped into the top job after 12 years as head of development at the college.

Dr Mulcahy has strong links to education in Carlow, having attended Scoil Mhuire gan Smál and Presentation College in the town before studying science at IT Carlow.

She then went on to NUI Galway to study for her degree and PhD in biochemistry, before returning to IT Carlow, first as a lecturer in biotechnology, and subsequently as department boss and head of development.

Dr Mulcahy also held research positions with BioResearch Ireland at NUI Galway and Dublin City University before she settled in the IT.

The appointment comes as IT Carlow continues to develop facilities at the Kilkenny Road campus, including the addition of a new research and development centre this year.

The college is also part of ongoing negotiations for a multi-campus technological university of the south-east. Commenting on the appointment, John Moore, chairman of the governing body of IT Carlow, welcomed Dr Mulcahy to her new role.

“The president’s office will, over the next year, oversee decisive progress towards the establishment of a multi-campus technological university of the south-east,” added Mr Moore, while Dr Mulcahy added: “We do not underestimate the work and challenges ahead as we progress towards this goal”.
