CARLOW Rowing Club secured five victories at the Limerick Regatta at O’Briens Bridge recently to bring their total to twelve pots for the season, following on from the great results at the Neptune and Commercial Regattas.
Limerick was the first regatta of the Waterways Ireland National Rowing League, won by Carlow last season when they secured ten points in the league.
The closest race of the day for Carlow was the women’s Novice Sculls.
It was a battle to the end for Carlow’s Majella Bolger when in a three boat final she beat a sculler from NUIG by two feet.
This is Majella’s first victory this season and she looks like a strong contender for the Irish championships later this season. Majella’s sculling coach is Barry Doogue.
Lydia Cullen and Helen O’Malley, coached by Paddy Behan and Kathryn Wall, beat Clonmel in the final of the women’s junior pairs event. The women’s junior 14 coxed quad of Jessica O’Neill, Roisin O’Brien, Hannah Larkin, Kate Dooley, cox Brian Walsh and coach Eamon Doogue had a brilliant win in the final of their event, beating crews from Fermoy, Clonmel and Waterford.
Carlow’s junior men continued their winning ways. The mens junior 16 team of Niall Murphy, Jamie McSweeney, Stephen Chubb, Christian Dorneau, Aaron Bolger, Leon Flemming, Simon Hayden, Dermot Scully and cox Brendan Byrne, coached by Anthony Dooley, won their final, beating crews from Colaiste Iognaid, Commercial and Galway.
Also in junior 16, Carlow’s Leon Flemming, Aaron Bolger, Stephen Chubb and Niall Murphy and coaches Tony Dooley and David Buckley took their final, beating Commercial, Colaiste Iognaid and St Michael’s from Limerick. Carlow’s next regatta will be Queens regatta in Castlewellan.
