DUMPERS have been accused of running down their own estate in Carlow town.
Springfield Park near the River Burrin is the victim of chronic dumping, which is taking place in and around a junction box.
“They are using it as a dumping ground, it’s becoming a tip,” said one local resident, who did not wish to be identified. “They are running the estate down to the last. They just keep on tipping rubbish.

“There are mattresses, bikes, old deep-fat fryers. It’s beyond a disgrace.”
The local said one family in the estate was behind the dumping. A frequent sight was children pushing a wheelbarrow filled with rubbish to dump in broad daylight.
“They do not care who is looking at them doing it.”
The resident said that the council had been contacted repeatedly about the matter over the years. The council would respond by clearing the rubbish but only for it to start again.
Environmental patrol officer Pat Kehoe said the council was well aware of the dumping problem at Springfield Park.
Just last week, Mr Kehoe removed a mattress along with other items and they hoped to clear the remaining rubbish in the near future.
“It’s an ongoing problem,” he said. “We have issued fines to a local family previously and there has been a positive outcome in court against them.”
Mr Kehoe appealed for locals who witnessed dumping to come forward and contact the council.
“People need to come forward and make a statement; we need the public’s help,” he said. “We cannot be there 24/7 watching out. People seem to know who they are but are reluctant to come forward.”
Locals were also encouraged to contact the council immediately if they witnessed dumping going on.
“If they contact us straight away, we’ll be up straight away,” said Mr Kehoe.
The area surrounding the junction box is private property, which is currently up for sale.
