Cllr Jennifer Murnane-O’Connor highlights the illegal dumping behind Lennons Sawmills at Bestfield on the Athy Road Pic: Michael O’Rourke
A SUITE of furniture, an old bed and a broken microwave … these are just some of the disused items dumped down a laneway on the Athy Road.
The latest spot of dumping at the site of the old Lennon’s sawmill saw bags of rubbish strewn across the scenic countryside, along with a mountain of household items and broken electrical equipment. “It’s constantly happening. This is not a once-off, it’s going on a long time and we need to do something; it’s absolutely disgraceful,” said local councillor Jennifer Murnane O’Connor.
The area, which backs on to lands owned by Teagasc, is regularly cleaned by the Teagasc staff, but as quickly as it is cleaned, it is spoiled again, according to cllr Murnane O’Connor.
“Teagasc are constantly cleaning it up themselves. They have been doing their bit but the minute it’s clean, people dump again. People should be ashamed of themselves,” added the councillor, who urged people not to ruin the Carlow countryside with illegal dumping.
“We need to do something. It’s disgraceful. We’re going to have to look at putting up a barrier or some kind of CCTV or something. We need to stop this.”
